Online casinos have been known to take bets on virtually anything where a winner will ultimately be declared. We’ve seen the rise in popularity of online casinos during the final weeks of “American Idol” and the odds for any good sporting event can be found on internet gambling sites. However, online casinos took it one step further when they offered odds for the Scripps National Spelling Bee competition last week. Spelling bees have become immensely popular over the years, resulting in prime-time live media coverage. The gambling community has not hesitated to jump on this bandwagon of success.
There are many people who feel that school children and spelling bees have no place in the world of online casinos. Some have gone so far as to declare it downright unethical that online casinos dare to mix child geared activities with the gambling world. Online casinos quickly defended their position and declared that they were well aware of the sensitivities surrounding the issue, which is why they refrained from publishing personal details about the participants and instead stuck to more general propositions such as the gender of the winner and whether he or she would be wearing glasses or not.
The Las Vegas gambling community has taken a different stand from that of the online casinos. Vegas follows strict Nevada gambling laws which states that people may only bet on athletic events or horseracing. As online casinos are generally unregulated, they are able to take bets on pretty much anything they want.
